Flyleaf warms up for 95 WIIL ROCK.
No. Not even going into the logistics of screaming (whether Kristen’s voice is suitable for screaming, whether or not she’s had any training for it), I believe that Kristen brings a different kind of passion into Flyleaf that’s distinct from screaming.
If you read Lacey’s book, The Reason, you’ll get into the depths of why Lacey screamed. (Or you can watch this video for her explaining it: http://youtu.be/DRwYtBMbyJA). Long story short, her reasoning behind screaming is the urgency of it. It’s something deep within her soul that longs to shout and proclaim to the world that begs and inclines the listener to hear what she has to say. That’s Lacey’s power in screaming. Kirsten’s power, however, lies in her ability to belt. It lies in the restlessness and unrestrictiveness in her voice. It lies in her ability to sing at the top of her lungs, and belt out notes.
And that’s what’s so special about Kristen: that’s she able to portray her passion and exuberance in the way that she does. She doesn’t need to scream to achieve the same sense of passion and urgency that Lacey did via screaming.
That’s not to say that Kristen isn’t able to scream. There were many live performances where Kristen is singing I’m So Sick and out of nowhere, she’ll pig squeal and fry scream. But, in my opinion, if she screamed like Lacey did, it’ll feel very fabricated and unauthentic, like she would be trying to be a copy of Lacey. As I said before, Kristen doesn’t need to scream to portray the same kind of power and passion. The way I see it, Kristen is forging a name for herself by distinguishing herself from Lacey and she’s doing that by not screaming. And let’s face it, if Kristen did scream it would undoubtedly be compared to Lacey and who knows how much disrespect and hate she would receive for that. People already disregard her for her voice, she doesn’t need to add another weapon to their arsenal.
Now, if Kristen really feels the need to scream, by all means go ahead. It’s all about genuineness. But I’m not going to hold her to a standard and make her scream when she doesn’t have to.
Do I miss the screaming? Yes. It’s one of the aspects that got me into this genre of music. Do I wish Flyleaf screamed more? It’s up to the members and what they want. I say, the screams they have are prefect the way they are. Do I want to hear more screaming? Yes and I’ll go to different bands that do. I’ll turn to Lacey’s new songs and enjoy the screams there. And if I’m feeling really nostalgic, their old songs are just a click away on my iPhone. I for one love this newfound direction Flyleaf has been exploring. If Flyleaf wants to put a scream in a song or not, that is their decision, and I’ll always be a fan of their music whether or not there is screaming.
